Allison's Amazing Gluten Free Breakfast Quiche

From my friend, Allsion...this is AMAZINGLY delicious fresh and reheated!

About half of a loaf of Udi's bread
Chopped onion to taste
1 cup shredded cheese
1 pkg cooked crumbled bacon
8 eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper

"I usually use my 11 x 7 Pyrex baking pan. Spray with nonstick spray. Tear bread into pieces and place in bottom of pan. Sprinkle chopped onions over bread, followed by cheese and bacon. (At this point you can put the pan in the fridge and bake later.) In a bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in milk, salt, and pepper. Pour egg mixture over contents of the pan. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 35 - 45 mins, or until eggs are set. Works well with ham, sausage, or different kinds of cheese. Mild chorizo with green chiles is tasty, too." -Allison W.

I love my son. This kid is one special boy. I know that every boy is special, but I have just been so impressed with my Zack lately. He is 12 and is in 7th grade. It is hard to make correct decisions when surrounded by a world filled with loud and incorrect influences. He loves fashion and sports and cool things as much as the next kid, but his desire to be clean and choose the right makes me appreciate him more each day. He is an incredible example to me of rising above the noise and making a positive difference in this world.

Plus, look at that grin! Who could resist that smile?

My Latest Yummy Gluten-Free Find

A few months ago I discovered that I am gluten intolerant. Since then I have found some pretty fantastic gluten-free foods (as well as some not-so-fantastic ones). On the top of my "fantastic" list has got to be these AMAZING double chocolate brownie bites by Enjoy Life. The flavor is full of chocolately goodness, the texture is soft and chewy, and the size is just perfect to eat 2 or 3 and not feel guilty.

If you have a Fred Meyer, you can find them in the gluten-free health food section. If not, I have also found them on Amazon.com.

Seriously, if you are GF (or heck, even if you aren't!), you have got to give these a try! If you are in the neighborhood, come on by; I've got lots in my pantry!

I have never quite mastered the art of financial management. My successes and failures have ebbed like the tides of the sea over the years. My greatest efforts always leave me a little better, but never quite a master…or anywhere close to it.
I have goals of wealth like anyone, with hopes and dreams of being free of debt and long-term financial stability. I want to travel the world, do good for others and my family, and enjoy the freedom and peace that come from managing talents and resources well.
When I have found that something isn’t working, the blame is not to be tossed onto another, rather the fault lies directly within me. This is not an easy thing to recognize, nor admit once the recognition has been made. It is even harder when another takes the time to lovingly point out your all-consuming flaw. It hurts and the pain even worsens as you try to cut it out.
This last weekend I had an incredible revelation: I am a ravenous consumer. OUCH. It hurts to just type that. I realized that most of what I think about is what I want to buy for this room or that space in my yard or what shoes I need to complete this outfit. I get sucked in by ads and catalogs that show me the things my children and I “need” to look absolutely gorgeous this Fall (insert current season here). I have realized that I am sucker! The sad news: it only hurts me and my family…it hurts my dreams and goals for the future.
I have decided that rather than being that crazy consumer, I am going to switch gears and become a PRODUCER! Not only am I going to produce income with my jobs, but I am going to produce success in our home by doing the following:

Go through things that we do not need and sell them on Amazon.com or eBay. I have already had great success in doing so the last couple of days! You can actually “trade-in” DVDs for $ on Amazon and the bidding wars on eBay over your used items is a blast!

Create and follow a weekly menu, allowing myself room for switching it up a bit. Shopping for and buying only the items on my list will eliminate a great deal of impulse purchases.

Return and report each day to my best friend: my husband. Because he is patient and kind, it is easy to be honest with him. I can share my PRODUCER successes with him from the day and plan our expenses for the upcoming day and events.

Revamp a monthly budget. My husband and I have looked at our needs and created a budget that is well below what we earn. We have room for some fun as well, which is critical. Having fun as a family and getting out is crucial for happiness in the home. Life is truly meant to be enjoyed…within our means.

Set up untouchable savings accounts. I have set up one account for Christmas that I can contribute to anytime, but the funds are only available to me come November. We have set up a similar account for a Spring family vacation each year. These are exceptionally helpful to our family because the two most expensive occasions of the year will not have to come out of our monthly budget.

Only use a credit card if funds are available to cover the charge. All purchases are to be made within our budget and recorded as such. If we do not have the cash in the bank to cover a purchase, we pass, wait, or plan to save for it.

Of course, the most difficult of all of this is changing my mindset. It has been hard to see myself as I really have been. Buying online is incredibly fun and having those packages arrive is like a gift at the door…but truly, it is a curse if one cannot afford it. I will not rob myself or my family of our dreams and goals anymore and I am on the prayerful road to correction. It is difficult to put off what we want right now in hopes of something better in the future, especially when the future is uncertain. However, the future will always be uncertain if no preparation is made to make it bright and stable.
In all honesty, I have found great relief since my discovery. Things are not perfect right now, but I feel God’s pleasing eye upon me as I have tried to humble myself to see my faults and desire change. I can see and feel the literal blessings upon our family already. Our relationships will improve, peace will abound here, and our future is brighter and stable. Consistency at being a PRODUCER will bring success. I just know it!

I Shared My Lunch with Mr. Yellow Jacket

Today has been a good day. Although I have some kind of nasty cold, my house is quiet, smells good, is clean, and is on its merry way to being ready for cooler weather. I feel a sense of accomplishment as I have put away Spring clothing for the family and hung up or folded the Fall and Winter attire. It just feels good.
I decided to make myself a lovely omelet for lunch. I sauteed some fresh red onions, poured the beaten eggs atop, added some fresh DonSalsa, ham, and cheese. Once it was finished, I gracefully garnished it with fresh basil sprigs from my generous friends. I’m glad I made it so terribly lovely for I was about to welcome an unexpected guest.
I took my picture perfect omelet out to my patio to enjoy in the fresh Fall breeze. The birds were singing closely, my flowers bursting their last hoorahs before the first frost, and the world was at peace.
Suddenly, I heard a faint buzzing. That faint buzzing quickly became close and Mr. Yellow Jacket appeared. Oh, he was a fine yellow jacket indeed, all yellow and black with strong shiny wings. I just watched him buzz around me. Most normal, sane people would shew the bugger away…”but why?”, I thought to myself. So, I decided to just see what he would do.
He obviously was drawn to me by the heavenly aroma of fresh divine omelet. I really couldn’t blame him; it smelled good enough to eat! So…down he buzzed to the side of my plate. I just stopped, mesmerized by the calm of the day, and waited. He was ever-so-polite and never put his tiny little feet on my food. Oh no, he was a gentleman indeed.
He walked right up to a little piece of ham that had slipped away from my gourmet delight and began to nibble away at it. It was incredible! His impressive jaws cut like a knife as he took his bite with great determination. One chunk was all he needed. He seemed to give me a little nod of gratitude as he turned and flew off with his prize.
I wondered if he would run and tell the others of the silly lady with the delicious omelet. Like I said, he was a gentleman and must have understood that additional guests were not invited. I sat in peace for the remainder of my meal. What a curious meal indeed.
I am glad that I made a friend today and that I wasn’t too busy shewing him away. In some teensy tiny corner of the world today, I made a difference.

Ah, the First Day of School...that just needs to be capitalized! I get just as excited as my kids as I remember how fun this time is! Owen and Avery were sweet to pose for Mom out in the back before we drove to school this morning. Owen is in 4th grade and Avery is in 1st this year.

Zack is a big 7th grader this year and just made the football team. He is very excited and has a great deal of energy to burn out on that field!

Avery's best friends and neighbors came over for a quick visit before school started. What a fun time!

We had the best time at Multnomah Falls in Oregon yesterday! We hiked up to the top of the falls and enjoyed one of our best family times together. Our kids were seriously awesome troopers and loved the view, the waterfall, the birds, bugs, and even a huge lizard we found. Times like these will last for a lifetime. Jay and I have decided that we will be taking detours like this WAY more often!

Yesterday after a full day of yard work, we relaxed with the kids and our neighbor boy coloring eggs for Easter. It was a perfect day out, so why not do it outside where the bunnies lay their eggs anyway, right?!

Even on Easter, our BYU support comes out!

...but the most impressive was her "Hello Kitty" egg that she drew all by herself! Those eggs are hard enough to draw on as it is, so this was just extra awesome.

Here's a little finished product preview of Project Yard Makeover. It is turning out to be all we hoped, but it sure is a lot of work! Totally worth every sore muscle though. :)

Owen is 9 Years Old!

Owen is quite possibly the biggest Jimmer/BYU basketball fan of all time! His whole 9th birthday has been centered around this theme and what better time than during March Madness! Sure hasn't hurt that BYU has made it to the Sweet 16 either!

We love our Owen and can't believe how tall and handsome he is getting! His sweet smile and kind heart warms our family and makes the Ogden household loads of fun. We are so thankful for Owen and that he came straight from heaven 9 years ago today.

Run for Ribbons

This last Saturday the boys and I had an awesome opportunity to combine our forces for good. We ran the Run for Ribbons race to raise money for the fight against cancer. We each received a blank shirt that we could color in to represent the kind of cancer for those we were running.

Our awesome Grandma Morgan is battling cancer right now and we ran hard for her this day. Grandma is fighting hard and we are so proud of her! We also chose Momma Lees, who just found out last week that she has stage 3, possible stage 4, ovarian cancer. She is the mother of one of my dearest friends, Yvonne. Owen, my little guy next to me, chose to also run for Matthew, a little boy who lost his fight with cancer last winter. He was our Zack's age and a very close friend to our dear friends, the Cases.

It was a very touching day and I was so proud of my boys for running so hard for someone else.

We are also very proud of Zack for taking 2nd in the race and completing his 5K in 23 min and 37 seconds! Wow!

To all of you who have been affected by cancer now or in the past, we hope you can feel our love and our prayers for you and your family.

My New Loves

You know how life just kind of gets into this same-old-same-old routine and then the Lord sees fit to throw in some curve balls? I just have to dedicate a blog post to the awesome curve balls that have come into my life lately.

New Love #1: Scouts
A couple of weeks ago I was called to work with the Cub Scouts in our ward. I always thought doing this would be fun, but WOW! It is awesome! These boys are so great and full of energy!

We had our Blue and Gold carnival last week and it was a total blast. Every week is going to be a party with these guys...and I love the ladies I get to work with as well (here are two of them)!

Owen earned his Wolf Badge and did a great job not puncturing my skin while pinning the award on his mommy...me. I was very grateful and also very proud of my own growing Scout.

New Love #2: Pamela's Products
I recently have discovered that I have a gluten intolerance. Going gluten free is a little scary at first, but when you feel so much better, you get excited at the possibilities! I have a great friend, Yvonne, who has a daughter who cannot eat gluten and has directed me to "Pamela's Products."

Honestly, I like these brownies and pancakes even better than the original...and not only because I feel no pain after eating them! I found 4 lb bags of Pamela's Products Pancake Mix on Amazon for remarkably less than in-stores and we use it for everything. We make pancakes nearly everyday and tonight we made biscuits...all to do die for! Even my kids and hubby are loving this change thanks to this new find.

New Love #3: Zumba
You will NOT be getting a picture of this. My friends invited me to join them for Zumba class (taught by one of my new favorite people!) and I finally started this last week. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant because I had only seen crazy wild Zumba dancing and wasn't sure if I could move like that in a room by myself, let alone in front of a group. After one class, I was hooked! It is a so fun to dance and feel like a Salsa Dancer, especially with my group of new friends...which leads me to my next new love.

New Love #4: My friends!
We moved here nearly 8 months ago and I feel so blessed to have made such incredible new friends. They are fun, supportive, love me for who I am (with and without makeup), help me and let me help them, and I can't wait for the fun adventures ahead of us.

Life is good. Thanks for the curve balls, Lord. I'm glad you know me so well. :)

Just ask my kids and they will tell you, I LOVE VALENTINE'S DAY! There is just something so fun about a holiday that let's you share a little extra love for a whole day!

One of our favorite traditions is having the kids wake up to a table full of Valentine's and a special breakfast. We have always made pink pancakes in the past, but this year we chose to do cinnamon rolls with pink frosting. The kids really enjoyed that!
Sweet little Avery had some eye itching and burning yesterday and woke up to full blown Pink Eye in both eyes. She still is cute to me, though!

Jeremy WOW-ed me this year by bringing the kids in on his surprise. They each wrote me 3 Valentines and hid them with a pink tulip all over the house. I had to go hunting for them and then at the end they had a huge bouquet of tulips for me! It was the sweetest Valentine's gift ever and I am so thankful for my sweetheart and my kiddos.

Our family has decided that 2011 is going to be one of our greatest years ever and it has already taken off with a bang! We were fortunate enough to have Jeremy's parents come and be with us for nearly a whole week early in January. We greatly enjoyed having them here with us talking, going out to eat, and swimming at their hotel. The kids loved the pool and hot tub and entertained the adults with incredibly painful, but hilarious belly flops. They had enormous red marks to prove their fun!

Scentsy is doing a Spring Sprint training tour all over the US this month and next. My sister, Andi and I, were able to attend in Portland along with one of my fabulous Scentsy Director's, Christa Gefke. We had a great time and learned a lot!

Jeremy is feeling absolutely amazing and has more energy than ever since his surgery in December. He is quite the father and is always teaching our boys how to be men. Together they created this awesome hook board for the kids to hang their after school things on in the garage. It is pretty sweet!

Avery has finished ballet and has decided that she would like to try her hand in something new: gymnastics. She starts this week and is very excited about it. She is even going to be writing a report about her new activity for school.

The last week of January we were blessed to have my awesome brother, Michael Jensen, and his family come stay with us for my birthday. We had the best night watching Brian Regan live and laughed our heads off at his great comedy. Our kids got along perfectly and it was such a pleasure having them in our home. It ended much too quickly!

I have always enjoyed cooking, but my love for it is growing by the day! I am always looking for new things to create and enjoy with my family.

I turned 32 on the 29th of January and I must say that it was the best darn birthday ever! I was surrounded by my favorite people and loved soaking it all in. I think 32 is my favorite age so far. My darling friend, Erin Case, sent me this beautiful hand-crocheted hat...isn't it just cute?! One of my best friends from high school, Yvonne, has an incredibly talented husband, Malo. He hand designed and cut this GORGEOUS iron wall hanging for me. It now resides prominently in my bathroom above the jetted tub where I can stare at it for as long as my bubbles will float!

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bread

Pumpkin Cheesecake Bread
Makes 3 large loaves or 9 mini-loaves.

Blend:
6 TB butter
3 c sugar
3 eggs
One 29 oz can of canned pumpkin (3 cups)

Combine and add to wet mixture:
6 c sifted flour (best to keep this on the lesser amount than over)
1 TB cinnamon
1 TB nutmeg
1 tsp cloves
3 TB baking powder
2 tsp salt

Cheesecake Filling (Whip together and set aside):
Three 8 oz packages of cream cheese
¾ c sugar
3 TB flour
6 egg whites

Pour pumpkin bread mixture into sprayed mini-loaf pans, filling ½ way. Spoon cheesecake filling over pumpkin mixture in each mini-loaf pan. Cover with remaining pumpkin bread mixture. You can let it bake this way or swirl it a bit with a butter knife. The pic above shows it just left unswirled.

Bake 45 minutes in 350 oven. Let cool about 5 minutes and then wrap with plastic wrap. Let set over night before serving or giving away. This ensures an extra moist loaf the next day! Also good served fresh from the oven, but I quite like it chilled the next day. :)

My grandma will live to be a zillion! I am so proud to be granddaughter to such beautiful, good people. I miss you, Grandpa.

Make a Difference Day

On October 24th we had the opportunity to help build an entire park in Richland, WA. It was an amazing experience and the park went from a field to stunning in one day! Our whole family was able to participate thanks to Jeremy's company, who sponsored it. This was one of the pictures that was taken by the company that day and I just wanted to share it. I love seeing my family working side by side and enjoying every minute of it!

Saturday was a super day! We had the blessing of going with our dear friends, the Cases, to an apple farm in Mesa, WA. The Empeys, family friends of the Cases, have 900 acres of apples! Boise Trip

Avery and I were able to go last week with my sister, Andi, to Boise for our Choffy booth at the St. Luke's Women's Show. It was a great success, we worked hard, and got to have tons of fun along the way! Here Avery and I are with Erin Case, Allie Burris, and Andi.

Avery and Allie are BFFs and had a terrific time hanging out and going to lunch together. Allie is our sister-in-heart and we love her dearly!

Avery loved all the fun activities at the booths of the Women's Show, but REALLY loved her purple unicorn face painting!

One of our favorite places to go while in Boise was to see Grandma Morgan. Although we missed everyone that is usually at Grandma's house, we really enjoyed just sitting with Grandma and chatting it up. She made Avery a huge plate of fresh peaches, celery sticks with peanut butter, and raspberries. I think we were all in a bit of heaven that day!

It was such a treat to get to visit many friends while in Boise. We miss living there by all our neighbors...but so fun to go back and visit! Thank you to Avery's pallies, Jen, Erin, Denise, Madi, Jacque, Janell, Ashlyn, Lex, Cy, Darius, Allie, and Andi for such a fun trip!

Owen and His New Braces

Last week Owen got his braces on...he kind of needed them. ;)

He chose Zack's favorite colors since it was his birthday...who does that?! Sweet Owen, that's who.

Then Owen and I decided to play hooky and went to the Farmer's Market. We had a blast together!

Oh my...look who is ELEVEN years old today! Zack is such a great kid and really enjoying 6th grade. The teenage years are rapidly approaching...some days seem to proclaim that they have arrived early...and we are excited about these fun new adventures together. I love how the older he gets I seem to be remembering more about his baby years. We are so lucky to have him!

Now it is off to Red Robin for the birthday boy's favorite enormous burger!

Grandma and Grandpa Visit!

We are so lucky to have such a great Grandma and Grandpa Ogden! They drove over 9 hours to come visit us in our new home. We LOVED having them here! We were able to give them their anniversary gift from all their children. Grandma and Grandpa were sealed in the Logan Temple and we are so thankful for their good example of a loving marriage.

We made our famous Christmas breakfast, Ebilskivers, for Labor Day weekend. They were super delish; we gobbled all but one up. Avery took the little guy for her lunch treat at school Tuesday. =)

Thank you, Grandma and Grandpa, for coming to see us, going for a fun walk, and playing games with us. We love you so much and can't wait for you to come again!

First Day of School!

I can hardly believe that my Zacky is in 6th grade and turning 11. What a fantastic boy! I was a bit saddened that he wanted to go to school by himself this year on the first day of school, but I know he will do great! I am really proud of the strong young man he is becoming.

Avery started her first day of being at school all day and getting to enjoy lunch there. She is very excited about that last part! My baby is in first grade...wow! She did well and is looking forward to making lots of new friends to play with.

Owen is in 3rd grade now and he can't wait to find his bosom buddy. Zack and Avery love having lots of friends, but Owen searches for that one he really connects with. He makes me giggle...he will be one awesome husband someday! So loyal! Owen and Avery are at their own school now that Zack is in middle school.

It has been a great morning! I am so proud of my children and their ability to love life, learning, and school. This is going to be a great year...

...hmmmm...now that I have some time, I am going to go for a run!

Grilled Pork Tenderloin

We made my brother, Michael's, recipe for grilled pork tenderloin tonight and it was AMAZING!

Recipe:
1 1/4 cups vegetable oil
3/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp dry mustard
1 - 2 tsp pepper
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 1/2 tbsp parsley
1/3 cup lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, minced

8 oz sliced fresh mushrooms

METHOD:

Blend the above marinade ingredients in blender. Pour 1/2 to 2/3 over tenderloins and marinate for 3 to 4 hours. Preheat the grill on High, throw them on for 4-5 minutes, flip over 4-5 minutes, turn it to medium, baste with marinade a few times and cook until done (15-20 minutes).

Add mushrooms to remaining marinade and heat. Slice tenderloins and pour marinade over top to serve.

(I grilled each little individual slice afterward because mine needed a little more time.)

I also grilled corn in the husk...delicious! =)

The teacher was asking the kids (5 and 6 year olds) ways that they can show obedience. They had lots of great answers. Avery then raised her hand and said,

"I can be obedient by being modest and not wearing zucchinis."

"What in the world is a Juicy Lucy?", you may ask. Well, it is a deliciously seasoned ground beef patty surrounding several slices of colby jack cheese and then grilled to sumptuous perfection.
No, I didn't come up with this...we saw it on Man Vs. Food a few months ago.

You can eat it on a bun or all by itself!
It does get a little messy though!

The whole family loved them! It was a fun day...

I am so excited about our dinner that we had tonight! I marinated steak in extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil, freshly pressed garlic, fresh ground sea salt and peppercorns, then grilled it...and VIOLA! It was so simple, but turned out so tasty...and very healthy.

My kids gobbled it up and my hubby was oh-so-pleased. I love cooking! =)

We are so excited about our new home in WA! We closed on Friday and are all moved in. We are still unpacking a couple straggler boxes, but we are almost finished. Thanks to my mom, Beverly, our kitchen and bathrooms are exceptionally organized and neat...thank heaven for moms! We love the neighborhood and are looking forward to our new ward.

Jay and I were out in the garage when a storm was brewing just a few minutes ago. The thunder started and wouldn't stop! We commented on how we couldn't remember the last time we heard constant thunder like that. Then the sky emptied hail down and it filled the streets! It was quite the sight to see...and it hurt when I was pelted in the side!

Twelve Years!

I can't believe that I have been married for twelve years to the man of my dreams! Time just goes by so quickly. It has been fun for Jay and I to reminisce and talk about when we first met, our first impressions, when we "really knew". He really is the greatest guy and I feel so excited to be his girl forever.

General Conference was so great today and I loved Elder Holland's talk about real love. I feel so blessed to have that kind of true love with my hubby of twelve years. It really does just keep getting better!

Fablehaven Fun!

I have never taken much time to read until my sister got me hooked a couple of years ago. Now I love to read all kinds of books, but these are my favorite. They are creative, fun, clean, and magical in so many ways...in the nature of the story, but also in the way that it takes me all over the world with these great characters.

I have been counting the days until the 5th and final book came out: it was yesterday. I found out that Brandon Mull was going to be on his book tour here in Boise today and I have been excited all week! I felt like a little kid on Christmas all day anticipating the new book and meeting the author of my favorite books!

I was early to Deseret Book before the signing even started, but the line was well over an hour and a half long. I waited with my three anxious kids for twenty minutes and we moved about three feet. We were standing right next to Brandon Mull so the kids got to watch him in action, which they just loved! They were given a free poster and bookmark, which kept them happy for about three extra minutes. They were teetering between waiting to meet the author and just buying the book and leaving, like so many others were opting to do. I was secretly hoping that patience would win them over, but in the end (ten seconds later), we stepped to the register to just get the book.

Zack had asked the gentleman with Brandon Mull if there were any copies of the book that were already signed, but there were not. While checking out, I thought to ask the lady if she had any pre-signed copies...I was just aching for one! Another lady, who seemed pretty in-the-know stepped up just then and said that she had only four, but they were special.

I must have smiled just right, because she gave one of them to me!!! I was so excited! I only paid the $19 and was on my merry way; they didn't even charge me extra or anything! I love Deseret Book! On our way out we stopped to snap some pics and bounced out of the store giggling.

Seriously, I am thirty-one, but that was some of the best fun and excitement I have had! I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to meet him in person and sign our book in front of us, but I have my book, my pics, and a big grin on my face.

Don't worry though, it was totally for the kids. ;)

It's Great to be Eight!

Our Owen Buh-Dowen is turning eight today, Monday, March 22nd! He has always been such a sweet boy since the day he was born. He has always been a smiley boy, but sometimes you have to guess if he is smiling because he is happy or if he is up to some kind of harmless mischief.

Owen is such a delight to our family and we are so thankful for him! Happy birthday to our big boy!It is great to be eight!

(I couldn't find any digital pictures of him as a newborn because we didn't get a digital camera until after he was one! Now we wonder how we do without them and wonder what film is.)

We have 1 o'clock church. It is also Daylight Savings. Our one day to sleep in a little is on Sunday mornings. This morning we woke to the sounds of children busily working in the kitchen. When we stumbled out of bed and into the dining room, this is what we found waiting for us!

French Braiding Success!

When I was a little girl, my mother was the master french braiding lady. She could do french braids around my head, inside out, upside down, you name it, she could do it! She could get them exceptionally tight...I remember crying because sometimes they were too tight! She had amazing braiding skills and I wanted to be just like her!

I used to be able to braid well when I was younger, but got out of practice and well, I pretty much stunk at it for the last decade. I decided a while back that I was going to improve myself and learn to french braid again. I sat down this morning, determined to get it right the first time, and to my great astonishment and pleasure...I did it!

Although they are not perfect, I think I would have made my mother proud today!

I have been looking at our picture collection lately and have just been amazed at how quickly my kids are growing up. Zack will be eleven this year, Owen eight, and Avery six. My birthday is at the end of the week and feel so thankful for all of the blessings I have been given over that last thrity-one years. Wow, thirty-one! I think I like my thirties!

So, in keeping with my blog post title, I love my kiddos. They are the greatest blessing, right next to my amazing husband. Isn't it funny how birthdays make you self-reflect and think of your many gifts? I sure am one lucky girl...can I still call myself "girl" at thirty-one?

I am ending my day with that "my-husband-is-the-sweetest-man-ever" feeling. Not only did Jay spend the whole day with me, but he took me into Pottery Barn, one of my favorite stores. We walked around enjoying the Christmas music, admiring the beautifully unique ornaments, and enjoying the cozy atmosphere together hand-in-hand. He asked me what kinds of things I liked and pointed out things he would like and where they would look good in our future "dream home." We didn't buy anything, but it the whole experience left my heart feeling so light and free. He really is my best friend...I am the luckiest girl on Earth. =)

Christmas Through the Eyes of My Little Girl

As a mother, you always hope to be able to instill within your children the understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. Tonight was one of those experiences that makes a mother's heart melt with joy. Our family decorated for Christmas together tonight and Avery found our Little People nativity as we were going through the holiday bins. She asked me if she could set it up all by herself this year. After the hustle and bustle of decorating the tree and enjoying the evening together, Jay and I sent the kids off to bed. As I was cleaning the living room, I found the nativity that Avery had set up and my heart swelled with love. Baby Jesus was nestled in His manger right in the center and everyone was placed looking over Him as closely as possible. Not only was Avery excited to set up the nativity because she loves Christmas, but she understands who it is all about.

It is amazing what our children teach us. May we all take time to remember the reason for our Christmas celebration this year and, like Avery, turn our attention to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

New Job!

So...I know I have a million jobs already (Choffy, Scentsy, helping with Jay's Choffy business, being a mommy, on and on...) but now I have REAL go-somewhere-each-day-and-get-a-pay-check job! But wait...it gets better! I am working at Great Harvest on Fairview right past Wal Mart on the left in that great collection of specialty shops by the big red barn farmer's market. We make the best bread, cinnamon rolls, scones, cookies, and SANDWICHES! You have to come try the Turkey Pesto...I will even add extra pesto if you ask real nice. =)

My sweetheart was laid off a couple of weeks ago and I am helping the fam out while Jay is applying like crazy all over the United States...and even for some jobs overseas. Jeremy is a Civil Engineer, so if you hear of anything in your area, please let us know!

We feel so blessed with all of our family and church and friend support. We can honestly say that we have never been happier and feel that this change in our lives is going to be for the better and open up great new opportunities for our future! Besides, I never would have found the best place to work, not to mention all my new best friends there!

Owen as a Power Ranger (we think!) and Zack as himself, the lacrosse player. He decided that he was too old for trick-or-treating earlier in the month, but his friends talked him to going out and getting some candy after all. I think he was pretty glad that he did!

Weekend at Grandma's House

We had a great time at Grandma and Grandpa Ogden's house last weekend! We got to be with cousins and family; watch General Conference, the BYU game and Cade learn to crawl; dig holes and put in a new sprinkler system for Mom and Dad; and eat lots of yummy food and treats.

My Baby Boy is Ten!

I really can't even believe that my baby boy, Zachary, is ten years old today. As a mother, I feel so blessed to have been sent this incredibly talented and independent boy and feel privileged to watch him grow up and become a young man. Looking back at the pictures of him over the years I notice that he always has something on his face: a smile.

Zack was so excited to wake up this morning and be ten. We talked all about the day he was born and he asked lots of questions that only a ten-year-old would think of. Life with Zack is enjoyable and I hope that I take more time to cherish him as the years begin to whizz by even faster.

Happy Birthday, Big Guy! You sure are a good kid and always sprinkle sunshine wherever you go!

First Day of School

Today was the first day back to school for the Ogden kiddos. Zack was so excited that he kept spilling food on his shirt and had to keep changing! Good thing it is laundry day.

Jay went to work late and so we enjoyed the morning together having french toast and changing Zack's shirts. We walked to school (I love where we live!) and the boys quickly took off to see their friends. I was painfully aware of how big my kids are getting!

Owen found a bug, of course, on the way to school. He informed us that this Monarch was the state butterfly. =)

I love this one: Daddy and his little girl

We took Avery to her class room and then she went in with the rest of her new classmates.

I was just fine until Jeremy whispered in my ear, "...and life will never be the same..." I have never cried when my boys went to school, but there is something different about it being my little girl AND my last. The tears just came.

We walked home hand-in-hand feeling a change in the air for our little family. We walked in the door at home together and I couldn't help but feel that the house was empty. I could hold the tears pretty well at the school, but at home they just flowed onto Jay's shirt (who now needs a clean shirt as well.) But, I got it all out and am doing okay enjoying a little peace and quiet. I read my scriptures at the kitchen table in the sunshine and will be doing laundry today (Zack needs shirts for tomorrow's breakfast.)

Primary Temple Trip

Our ward had a special Primary activity today at the Temple. It was so neat to see all the kids from the ward all dressed up and learning about the temple. Jay and I were invited to be drivers so we took advantage of the photo opportunities!

But wait...there's more!
The Primary leaders had each of the kids stand by the temple to have their picture taken and this is all Owen would give them...

...until he found the gazillion praying mantis resting in the shade of the temple. This kid could find bugs anywhere. He had eight of these guys on him at one time (look on his head.) Owen's words: "The temple is so fun! Can we go back tomorrow?" I guess that is one way to get your kids to love the temple.

Zack decided to get in on the bug action as well (on his fingers)...they liked his green shirt. =)

Avery chose a watermelon theme for her birthday party this year and it was as cute as it was fun! I was impressed that she chose something so creative, rather than princesses or Strawberry Shortcake. My amazingly talented friend, Allison, made this adorable watermelon shirt for the birthday girl and she loved it! All the little girls wanted one just like Avery...thanks Ali! It was a great party for such a sweet little girl!

Avery saved her garage sale and birthday money and bought herself a big girl bike! Jeremy is having fun teaching her how to ride without training wheels. She is doing pretty well for a first-timer! (You can see Zack doing some sweet jumps on his scooter, too!)

Got Zucchini?

Need something to do with all that zucchini from your garden this year? I am usually a super healthy baker, but if you are feeling like me about the abundance of zucchini, I have just the solution:

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread

2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Combine and set aside.

3 eggs
1 cup sugar (a little less)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup canola oil
1 tsp pure vanilla
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 oz melted unsweetened baking chocolate (2 blocks or if you don't have baking chocolate: 6 TB baking cocoa melted with 1 TB plain shortening)
2 cups zucchini

Combine and add to dry ingredients. Mix well. Pour into greased and floured baking pans (regular or mini.) Bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 40-50 minutes. Delicious!

I am not sure where I found the recipe, but I have modified it to my liking anyway. Hope you enjoy your zucchini now! ;)

Aelizia'a Baby Blessing

Each summer we take a trip to WA to visit friends and family. It is always a highlight of the summer! Here is my nephew, Lyncoln. He has tons of energy and makes the perfect Home Alone face...he looks just like Macaulay Culkin!

My brother, Brad, is quite the aspiring photographer and is getting really great at it! He sure has grown up a lot!

Avery Turns Five!

Our baby is now a big girl! Avery turned five on August 3rd while we were visiting family in WA. Zachary got up super early to make her cinnamon rolls for her birthday breakfast. I was very impressed with his thoughtfulness and Avery LOVED the fruits of his early morning labor.

Avery got her ears pierced! She was amazingly brave as the girl at Claire's did one ear at a time. Avery barely flinched! She chose some darling little studs (the same that cousin Nia chose when she got her ears pierced on her 5th birthday) that sparkle just right!

We found a Lego store at the Washington Town Square in OR. We didn't even know those existed! Owen and Justis were in heaven after all that time in the earring store.

Avery loves sour gummy worms so her cake was surrounded by them. She had such a great day! Here she is with Justis, Nia, and Owen.

I can't believe my baby is five! I took time in the morning before all the hustle and bustle of the day started to snuggle her in bed and tell her all about the day she was born. I can still feel the softness of her cheeks and the smell of her long, fluffy dark hair. Happy birthday, Princess, you sure are a good girl!

Princess Party

Avery has been invited to the neighborhood Princess Party! There are two amazing young women in our neighborhood who put fun things on for the kids in the area each summer. She has been looking forward to this for weeks! She isn't Cinderella or Snow White, but I like the Poodle Princess look!

Corn Kids

Today we are going to Grandma Morgan's for dinner- one of our favorite things to do! Grandma had us pick up six dozen ears of corn yesterday at the farmer's market for today's dinner...Uncle Kevin is coming and he will probably eat at least half of that (I kid, I kid!) The kids wanted to get the corn ready for Grandma so they had a corn shucking party in the backyard. As you can see from the photos, they got a little creative as they neared the 50th ear of corn. Have I ever mentioned how much I love having a little girl? ;)

Happy Independence Day!

What a holiday! We love the 4th of July and all of its festivities. We started out our day with the annual Ten Mile Ward Breakfast, which was delicious and full of great talks and songs. We then played at home, went to see Jay at the Farmer's Market, got in a nap (yea!), and finished up preparation for our BBQ at our house. (This is Jen and me at our BBQ.)

Each year we invite all of our friends and neighbors over for a BBQ and fireworks. This year was our best ever! We loved having the Cases bring Erin's family (this is Lex and Erin with her dad and little Cyrus). Each family brought something to share and our potluck table was packed with all the 4th of July favorites!

We had friends come from all over the area to join in on the fun! We are so blessed to have such wonderful friends with which to spend our time. (This is Eric and Melissa Rafn.)

I even got to get in on the fireworks fun this year with sparklers and lighting the fireworks in the road. I even lit some flowers and threw them in the air...getting daring in my old age! =)

Here Owen and Brooklyn, our neighbor girl, are sharing some fire to make the sparklers light up. The kids enjoyed the fireworks more than ever. Zack got to be the big kid again and help Lex light the 'big ones.'

The Cases thought up this great idea: a Drinkery! They had all kinds of Italian sodas and fancy non-alcoholic drinks available to make. We had a huge line of everyone waiting to get their turn. Thanks Lex and Erin!

We hope that you all had a wonderful day enjoying your freedom in our beautiful country. We feel so thankful for all of the many blessings that we have received because of those who have gone before and made our freedom possible. Happy Independence Day!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to our favorite guy on earth: Daddy! Jay loves creamed honey so the kids and I went to the local farmer's market to find him some. He loved it!

Avery picked out a "With Sympathy" card from my card box. She did not know what the card said but she signed her name and drew a picture of him with chicken pox.

Zack, Owen, and Avery love their daddy and love to be with him. He is a great example of patience, love, and kindness to our children. He always takes time to be with them together and one on one. I know that they will cherish that time together always.

We love you, Daddy! Thank you for being so wonderful to us! =)

She's Home!

Our little Avery has been released from the hospital (she had pneumonia) and is home now! We are so happy to have her home and to have the boys back with us as well. Aunt Nancy was so kind to keep the boys with her while we have been at the hospital since Sunday morning. I am so thankful for family and friends that came to visit her and certainly aided in her recovery. Heavenly Father is watching over us and keeping us safe and happy.

...you really want to see this? I suppose I am okay with everyone laughing with me...yes, even AT me! It was my first go at it, but let it be known that I nearly beat the whole run in the end. Of course, there is no video of my accomplishment, but for now...let's just laugh at the slow girl!

By the way, Jeremy promised me some of his tree, brick, and use of his ports the next time we play Settlers for posting this video. I should have checked with Lex first to see if it would be a good trade. =)

FHE at the Bike Park

We found this great bike park on Memorial Day and went there last night for FHE with our great friends, the Browns. What a fun place to just let loose and find new biking skills!

Owen was mostly interested in finding bugs (no surprise there) and he found plenty! He eventually did ride his bike at the end and even got a bit daring.

Our princess on training wheels enjoyed the dirt trails as well while managing to stay perfectly clean. Gotta love that!

Jeremy was in biking heaven! He did plenty of stunts on his own bike but had to try out the boys' BMX bikes, too. This guy was built for biking and was very impressive.

The most impressive of all was ZACK! This kid has never been on anything like these courses had to offer and yet he quickly picked it up and even excelled. There was a professional camera man on site for fun and he asked Jay and I if he could film Zack. It was cool!

Here are a couple of videos I took with my camera. I actually have one of me on the big course, but I wrecked right at the end so I will spare you the chuckles!

Avery's Preschool Graduation

Avery is not only turning five soon but has also rounded the corner from toddler to grade schooler. Avery has graduated from preschool and is heading on to Kindergarten this Fall. Just as a personal note, I can't believe that my baby is going to school. She is my last and my only girl and is so precious to me. I enjoy each day with her at home. I am glad that Kindergarten is only half day here.

Each of the kids in her class chose a holiday theme from the year and sang the song that Miss Janet taught them. It was super cute. Avery chose Valentine's Day and is actually standing on her heart here. =)

Preschool graduation had an exciting unexpected guest right at the end: a bat. Yes, it was noon with the sun shining brightly. The moms unitedly decided that he must be rabid so we all made the only dad there catch him. I don't know what was funnier, the dad chasing the crazy bat all over the patio or watching the moms run around screaming. I am proud to report that I did not scream nor did I panic. He even flew at my leg and I remained calm. Ask my mother-in-law how impressive that is for me!

Here is my Little Miss Avers with Miss Janet and the Busy Bee Preschool Class of 2009. It's on to the real world now, kiddos!

Last Friday night my friends and I had a Girl's Night Out for Sherri, our great friend who is moving to Seattle next week. We went to YoYo's for the best frozen yogurt where you make it "yo way!" We watched 13 Going On 30 all night and chatted til midnight. It was a great party and it was good just to be girly with everyone. We love you Sherri and you will be missed. Thanks for the friendship and memories. You are going to love Seattle...in the summer! (Here's a big giggle just for you!)

Memorial Day 2009

We love Memorial Day. It is such a special time to remember and pay tribute to those who have gone before. Our family enjoyed honoring those who have loved mercy and freedom more than life. We are thankful for ancestors, grandparents, parents, brothers, and uncles who have served or who are serving our country. We could not have enjoyed this beautiful day together as a family as we did if it were not for them.

Jeremy is the best dad. After we visited the State Veterans Cemetary we went all over the city visiting different places. The boys especially loved the bike park where we stopped and watched bikers perform cool tricks on difficult trails loaded with planks, bridges, teeter-totters, jumps, etc. It was impressive what they could do!

I love this picture. We had such a nice day of just being together. The kids got along so well and really enjoyed one another. Owen even taught us his song from his school program. Maybe Avery will be the next star!

Owen is our animal and bug guru. Everything in nature is attracted to this kid. He had everything from butterflies landing on his head to baby geese waddling his way. They just love him! It must be his good natured spirit. He was just born that way.
